He is famous for his Description of Greece, a lengthy work that describes ancient Greece from firsthand observations, and is a crucial link between classical literature and modern archeology. The main interest in the rather eclectic description was monuments (especially sculpture and painting) of the Archaic and Classical periods, along with the historical context and the holy background (cults, rituals, beliefs), for which he had a deep sense.
The work is organized on the basis of his travel to cities and sanctuaries outside asty of Achaia, with some interest in the topography.
His interest in objects after 150 BCE is small, although the modern monuments of attracting attention, especially the works of Hadrian.
Wrote as an eyewitness and accuracy (despite the demonstrable inaccuracies) has been confirmed by archaeological evidence.
